As of July 2026, while government regulations for ride-sharing platforms like Uber are still being finalized, the iconic red taxi remains the most common means of private transportation in Hong Kong. However, trunk space in regular taxis is quite limited. Most can only fit a foldable manual wheelchair, meaning you will need to transfer yourself into the passenger cabin while a travel companion or the driver loads your wheelchair into the back. Because of this, we’ll focus mainly on Hong Kong’s wheelchair-accessible taxi fleets, which come equipped with rear-loading ramps so you can roll right in. Just keep in mind that these specialized fleets are relatively small.

If you try to hail one on the spot through an app, you might find yourself waiting 15 to 30 minutes. If you have a strict schedule to catch—like heading to the airport—we strongly recommend contacting an operator to book your ride well in advance to keep your trip stress-free.
